Our founder, Dave Horsfield, has a long history in the ski industry, starting his career as a ski instructor, rising to a CSIA Level 3 certification. As an Engineer he was distracted for a time building a career with a global engineering consulting company, rising from field engineer to one of the top executives in the firm. However, this couldn’t stop him from hitting the slopes in his spare time.
When it was time for a change, it was his family who said “you are so passionate about skiing and your skis, why don’t you start building them?” That was all it took! Driven by the countless times hearing his buddies say “this ski is great, but I wish it was more stable at speed (or turns quicker, floats better…..)”. This is a natural consequence of mass produced skis that are built to simply satisfy their definition of an average skier. So the idea was born, to build a few very special skis that are designed meticulously for each person. What followed was intense research into the technology of skis, and the custom ski industry. It was clear that a high degree of technical know-how would be required to build quality, high performance skis.
Dave identified SpuArt Custom Skis and Snowboards of Innsbruck, Austria as a very successful custom ski builder and traveled to their workshop to complete due diligence on their custom skis. Dave spent countless exciting days building skis with them, testing numerous products. He was ecstatic to have found such professional people with the same passion for excellence – thus, producing a top flight product. Thoroughbred Skis was founded in 2015, starting with SpurArt designs, then innovating unique shapes, flex profiles and design to build serious Thoroughbred skis. Always with the mission to put a smile on the face every time our customers ride their Thoroughbred’s!
In July, 2015, the Thoroughbred Skis shop at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort was built, and production was underway. In 2022 move a bit south down the Powder Highway to Windermere, BC establishing a new and improved ski building shop. Word quickly spread through avid skiers on the mountain seeing the product and instantly falling in love. It was these now friends who drove our initial sales. We have never looked back….
